Install so you can compress a video on Windows

Paste this into Windows Terminal or Command Prompt:

If winget is missing, install App Installer from Microsoft, then paste again. Official Microsoft links only. The id is HandBrake.HandBrake. Do not paste a lookalike id from a comment thread.

HandBrake also needs .NET Desktop Runtime 10 from Microsoft. If the app will not open, or if the installer says the runtime is missing, install that runtime from Microsoft, then open HandBrake again. We do not host the runtime. We do not invent a Microsoft URL here.

How to compress a video

Install HandBrake with the command on this page, or take HandBrake-1.11.2-x86_64-Win_GUI.exe from GitHub Releases (ARM: HandBrake-1.11.2-arm64-Win_GUI.exe). Add .NET Desktop Runtime 10 from Microsoft if the app asks.
Open HandBrake. You should get a window, not a browser tab.
Open the video you already have. Pick a file you saved: Downloads, a camera card, a screen recording, an export from another app.
Pick a smaller size in the app. Use the size controls HandBrake actually shows. We will not invent a preset title or an RF number.
Start encode. Wait until the new file finishes writing.
Check the new file is smaller. Open the folder. Compare size with the original. If it is not smaller, pick a smaller size and encode again.

That list is the compress video path. You are not uploading the clip. You are not pasting a website link. The bytes stay on this PC.

Open a video you already have

Start with one file you can recognize. A short clip is a better first encode than a two-hour dump. Confirm HandBrake can read it. Then open the next file. An encoder that has never written one good copy is a bad place to dump a whole folder.

File Open in the app is the usual path. Drag and drop can also work if the window accepts it. We will not invent extra menu names. If the picker cannot see the file, you are in the wrong folder. Browse to where you actually saved it.

A video on a USB stick needs the stick plugged in. Ejecting the stick while encode is running can fail the write. Copy the source to Documents if you need the job to finish after the stick leaves. A file still named .crdownload or .tmp is not finished. Wait until the name is a real video type.

The app does not create the source. If the file is missing, still in a tab you never saved, or still in a chat attachment you never stored, the window has nothing to encode. Save the file first. Then open it.

Pick a smaller size in the app

Compress video here means a smaller copy, not a new story about codecs. HandBrake shows size controls. Pick a smaller size than the source. Play the preview if the app offers one. Then encode. If the first copy is still huge, pick a smaller size and run it again. Keep the original until you like the copy.

Resolution and bitrate both change size. This page does not pick numbers for you. Open the controls in the app. If the picture is far larger than you need to watch, drop the frame size there. If the picture size is already fine and the file is still heavy, drop the video rate there. Do not hunt a blog for a magic preset name. The app in front of you is the control.

Audio can add weight. If you do not need six channels of sound for this copy, leave a simple stereo track. If the source has no audio, leave audio off. We will not invent encoder labels. Use what the app lists.

A smaller copy can look softer. That is the trade. Watch the result once. If faces smear, raise size a step and encode again. If the file is still a brick, drop size a step. Two or three passes on a short clip teach you more than a chart we did not measure.

Start encode and keep the original

Start encode writes a new file. It does not replace the source unless you pointed the destination at the same path, which you should not. Browse a folder you control. Give the copy a name you will recognize. Keep the original name on the original.

Encode takes time. A short clip can finish in a minute. A long file can run while you do something else. Do not sleep the laptop into a disk-off state in the first test. Watch one short job complete. Then queue a longer one if you need it.

If you have several files, use the queue in the app. Add one job, add the next, start the queue. Do not open three copies of the program to race the same disk. One queue on one machine is enough.

Closing the window while a job is running can stop the write. If you need the PC, let the job finish, or pause in the app if it offers a pause. A half-written file is not the compressed copy. Delete the broken output and encode again.

Check the new file is smaller

When encode finishes, open the output folder. Check three things: the file opens, the picture is the part you wanted, and the size is smaller than the source. File size in Explorer is the check. If the copy is larger, you did not pick a smaller size. Go back and pick one, then encode again.

Play the copy in a player you already trust. If audio is missing, look at the audio track in HandBrake and encode again. If the picture is black, the source may be a type the app could not decode, or the destination path failed. Try a short known-good clip first.

Date modified should be now. If you are staring at yesterday's file, you opened the source by mistake. Sort by date. Open the new name.

First run, runtime, and SmartScreen

After install, open HandBrake once before you hunt a second program named compressor. If Windows shows a SmartScreen prompt on a first exe, read the publisher. Prefer the GitHub asset. Winget skips some of that path because Microsoft already listed the package. If winget is missing, the exe is still honest. Do not fetch a second setup from search.

.NET Desktop Runtime 10 is a real requirement on current Windows builds of this app. If HandBrake will not start, install that runtime from Microsoft, then try again. Desktop Runtime is the package the GUI needs. A smaller .NET runtime without desktop support can still leave the window missing.

Updates live on GitHub Releases and on winget when the package updates. We do not invent a newer number than 1.11.2 here. Read the release page. Usual Windows pick is still HandBrake-1.11.2-x86_64-Win_GUI.exe. ARM is still HandBrake-1.11.2-arm64-Win_GUI.exe. The zip is still a zip of this project.

When encode will not start

A zero-byte file will not encode. Download it again from the place you got it. A file that is actually a still image renamed to .mp4 will confuse you. Look at the real type. HandBrake encodes video. Save a real video, then open that.

If the disk is full, the write fails. Free space, then encode again. If the destination folder is read-only, pick Documents or a folder you own. If antivirus locks the new file while it is writing, wait, or exclude the output folder you control, then try a short test.

If the app reports the source is damaged, try a second copy of the same clip if you have one. This page will not repair bytes. It will not host a recovery tool. If the copy in email still opens on another machine, save a fresh copy here.

School PCs, labs, and uninstall

A lab image may block winget and unknown installers. Then this install is closed for that hour. Do not fetch a wrapper to get around policy. Use a compressor already on the image, or wait until you control the PC.

A borrowed laptop you return in twenty minutes is a bad place to leave HandBrake-1.11.2-x86_64-Win_GUI.exe. Use what is already on the machine, or do not install.

Uninstall is Apps in Windows, or the project uninstall. Quitting the window is not uninstall. If you only wanted one smaller file, quit first. If you want the program gone, uninstall. Fetch again from GitHub Releases or winget, not from a wrapper.
